Dreams of flying...

17 March 2011

We had our first proper photo shoot a couple of weeks ago and we finally got the results this week! They are fabulous! And truly can't believe we produced such beautiful work. We have a fabulous team to thank though and I don't think we would have been able to do it with out them.

On the day, we were located at the amazing Shoreham Airport. We had so much fun there. I think we would have spent longer taking photographs if we hadn't run out of memory space on the camera. It was a good thing though, as the electric high energy that had surrounded us all morning was starting to flag... and boy, was I tired (probably didn't help that I had decided to go to Spindle's third issue launch party the night before).

The items of clothing used for the shoot are a mixture of 1950s to 1980s. The dress below looks like it should be from the Twenties... but alas... it is an 80s replica (perfect for that Broadwalk Empire look though).  Most of the items will be available to buy on the website. Update on this soon... but for now... peruse and tell us what you think.

Hoot Hoot!

14 March 2011

Cassie and I absolutely love owls and that is part of the reason why we decided to call our business, Vintage Owl Boutique. Over the years we have been collecting owls of all shapes and sizes and we would like to share them with you by bringing you Owl Corner! Owl Corner is something you can get involved with, for example, if you have a collection of owls your self or if you just happened to come across an amazing owl whilst car booting or when your out and about, take a picture of it and send it in to us!

Here is a selection to get you started! Hoot Hoot.

One for the men...

13 March 2011

I started this post quite a while back and kind of forgot about it. I remembered it again when news broke out about Galliano being fired by Dior. I found the whole fiasco quite disappointing and felt reluctant to post this fabulous menswear collection, but upon looking at it again this morning I can't help but admire his work. Is that bad? I have been quite a fan of Galliano's collections of late, especially his work inspired by René Gruau (see previous post), and then seeing his Menswear Spring 2011 collection made my jaw drop once again. The designer decided to base his collection on Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton. And boy! Didn't he do well? He wanted to make a statement about new proportions in menswear and went for the Little Tramp look of shrunken jackets and baggy trousers. For the Keaton look he used retro-tailored pieces with porkpie hats. Fabulous!

What do you think of Galliano's collection? Are you also disappointed about recent events? Do tell!

A tribute to the fabulous Jane Russell...

1 March 2011

Marilyn Monroe & Jane Russell at Gruman's Chinese Theatre, 1953

The fabulous Jane Russell passed away at the grand old age of 89 yesterday. She was one of Hollywood's leading sex symbols in the 1940s and 1950s and only measured a tiny 38D-24-36 (she had a figure I would die for!). In her lifetime she starred in over 20 films including Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, The French Line, Double Dynamite and The Tall Men. Unfortunately her film career died by the 1960s and she turned her talents to music. In 1999 Russell said "Why did I quit movies? Because I was getting too old! You couldn't go on acting in those years if you were an actress over 30".

When Russell was just 18 she had a back-street abortion causing her to be unable to have children again. This obviously had an affect on her and in 1955 she founded the World Adoption International Fund (WAIF), which helped organise the adoption of thousands of children from overseas. She also  adopted several children in her lifetime.

RIP Jane Russell
