Now that the warmer months have come upon us it's a perfect opportunity to put those winter coats into storage and start to wear spring jackets and knits. I got this 1970s suede cardigan from Beyond Retro recently and think it's one of my best buys so far this year. The suede panels down the front is incredibly soft and I love the cheerful mustard yellow. Its a great addition to wear with flares or a suede skirt, just perfect for the 70s trend at the moment.

As you can tell, I'm quite obsessed with the 70s at the moment, so there will be quite a few boho outfits coming up soon. Watch this space! Will you be embracing the 70s trend this Summer and what has been your favourite buy so far this year?

BRRRR!!!! It was cold this morning! I'm not complaining but I've been finding the weather surprisingly warm lately, especially as I was still walking around without a coat on Friday night. Not something you would expect for late October! The cold weather was very inviting and I let out a little 'hooray' as I found my cosiest knit and favourite winter coat. The inspiration for today's OOTD.

I'm SO in love with the 'Blanket Trend' at the moment and it has been the perfect excuse to put on my green blanket poncho I found at a car-boot sale over the Summer. It was a bargain find, only costing me 50p!! 

The trend was first spotted on Burberry's A/W14 catwalk and high-street shops have fallen suit since and replicated their own variants, making it a very affordable trend for us fashionistas. This will definitely be a look I will be embracing more this A/W. It is perfectly boho and chic, and easy to style. The key is to layer and pair with a belt.

WHAT MR D WORE: Brogues Before (S)hoes

I like brogues. It's weird to think that, back in the early 20th Century when the term 'brogue' was coined, they were only considered appropriate for outdoor, country-wear. Traversing bogs and such.  Now, they are one of the most popular forms of footwear for both formal and casual occasions. The modern brogue started life in Scotland and Ireland as a really simple shoe for wearing O'er field and fell, mountain or, er... molehill. they were made from untanned hide and were perforated to all water to drain out when traversing those aforementioned bogs and other wet ground. Over the years, they've developed into something much more multifunctional. And just as well too. I mean, honestly. Imagine me, traversing a bog?

These are my new pair of classic tan Oxford full brogues and I love them. LOVE THEM. As with any new leather dress shoes, they'll need a bit of wearing-in when you first take them out of the box, but after a few days of pacing around, you'll find that you've got a pair of smart shoes that are as comfy as your favourite trainers. 

I bought my first pair of brogues a couple of years ago, on the cheap, from a 'High Street' Menswear establishment. But as much as I love them, they really were cheap and haven't aged well. A good pair of brogues should last a lifetime, so when Jones gifted me a brand spanking new pair, I knew I would be getting a decent quality shoe.

Jones Bootmakers (. . . since 1857, no less), are well known for making good quality, long lasting shoes at not-so-expensive-you-need-to-remortgage prices. They've got a great range of own brand and other designers on their website, but The Brogues I went for are Jones' own (many of the other brands, such as Fly, still insist on making stupid pointy-pointy shoes. I do not like stupid pointy-pointy shoes).

The best thing about brogues (as the pictures below attempt to demonstrate) is that they look perfect for formal events but actually, they're comfortable, hard wearing and durable enough to be worn for most occasions. Be it an important business meeting, date night or a stroll along the beach or country track, a good pair of brogues will do the job.

Now, your brogues will need a little TLC in order for them to have a full and lasting life. Avoid using too many chemicals. I wash mine with a cloth and some warm water with a bit of lemon juice, and then polish using good old fashioned wax polish, a decent set of brushes and some elbow grease. Do this often and well, and your brogues should last as long as you do.

My feet are happy. I am happy.

Howdi peeps! 

Here's a little style post of my birthday outfit last week. As you can see I'm embracing the pastel trend with a little Hawaiian twist. A friend of mine (thank you Gabby!) lent me this gorgeous wooden necklace and I'm just in LOVE with it! It was the perfect accessory for our family dinner date at our favorite Mexican in Brighton, La Choza.

I've been wanting a pair of chunky white sandals for some time and unfortunately can't afford Vagabonds at the moment :( Fortunately for me though, New Look, have brought out their own range! So with birthday money in hand, I went and treated myself to a pair :) I think they will be getting a lot of wear this Summer as they go with EVERYTHING! So I'm sure you will be seeing them popping up in future outfit posts ;)

In Brogue Magazine

Recently, Molly and I, were asked to model in the latest issue of Brogue Magazine. There were several models featured in the 'Love' issue, including colleagues from Beyond Retro: Davey Coles, Joe McCarty and Izzy Bee Philips. It was such an amazing opportunity to be part of a big project with many talented people; including cinematographer, Mark Stubbs, and creative director, Spirit de la Mare. Mark has worked on features and commercials in the past and is now dipping his toes into fashion photography. These are the results...

 This is Brogue's third issue. It is an alternative, underground and arts journal made-up of almost entirely of public submissions. You can view the magazine in it's entirety here or there is a beautiful limited edition hardback version available to buy here.  Hurry if you want a hardback copy as there's only a limited supply and they are going very quickly!   

All the clothes featured are from Beyond Retro and was shot on the roof tops and streets of Brighton. The shoot was inspired by black and white street photography seen in Europe over the 50s and 60s. The focus being on the many kinds of love, from parental to camaraderie. The results? Beautiful!

Don't Touch the Kitten

I had the fabulous opportunity recently to provide some wardrobe assistance for Brighton band, Kitten and the Hip. It was for their new music video, Don't Touch the Kitten, which was released last Monday and you can view the wonderful creation below....

Whaddya think? Doesn't Scarlett and Ashley look A-MAZING?! I especially love the trumpets!! The clothes were sourced from Beyond Retro and the gorgeous cream coat is from Hope & Harlequin. Make-up was done by the lovely and gorgeous Gemma Wheatcroft.

WHAT I WORE: Finding the perfect dress

I had a bit of a shopping haul at Beyond Retro last month. I bought a green maxi dress (which needed some work to it) and a 70s brown velvet jacket. As you can see from my pictures, the length of the dress was quite long and unflattering but there were little design features I just fell in love with when I saw it hanging on the rail.  Especially the über cute velvet peter pan collar! I just knew if it was shorter it would be perfect. So, with a little bit of DIY know how, I set about customising the dress.

It didn't take long to-do once I'd decided how long I wanted it. I carefully removed the excess and then re-hemmed the skirt using a sewing machine. It was done in under an hour and, voila, I had a dress I loved and adored. Don't you think it looks SUPER cute shorter? Plus it now goes perfectly with my new 70s jacket! LOVE IT! 

So, the moral of this post is; don't be too hasty if you find a garment that isn't perfect when your thrifting. With a little thought and skill you can make changes and customisations that will turn it into something you'll love forever. It's certainly a cheap and easy option to keep your wardrobe up to-date. If your not particularly brilliant with a sewing machine, getting alterations done for you are not too expensive these days. I highly recommend Alma's Alterations in Brighton. Only costs from £12-£20 (depends if there is a lining) to shorten a dress and she also offers a dressmaking service if you want something made from scratch.
